Mortar Mishap Kills Seven Marines During Night Fire Training

This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran, Roy Mcquaig. Roy grew up in South Georgia and passed on a full-ride golf scholarship to join the Marines. His town thought it was so crazy the local news station wrote a story on it.

Roy enlisted into the infantry as a rifleman and served two tours to Afghanistan and one tour to Kuwait, all during his first enlistment. He experienced a traumatizing training incident in which a mortar mishap left 7 Marines dead and 8 more injured.

One of the Marines died holding Roy’s hand. Roy leaves us with how his military experience affected his transition out of the Marine Corps, and how picking back up his passion for golf has helped keep him pushing forward.

Urban Valor was created so veteran could share their stories. Our veteran interviews are designed to allow the veteran to share however they wish. In doing so, we're able to develop discussions and bring awareness to veteran mental health like PTSD, veteran homelessness, veteran transition, and so much more, while also highlighting the benefits and values developed and instilled in these great men and women by our military.

Urban Valor works hard to give as many veterans a voice as possible, allowing them to share their stories, while I'll viewers and listeners can celebrate them, while also gaining perspective and education on what our veterans endured and the skills they've developed.
